Zz is for Zoo

The Zoo has been one of my favorite themes so far.  The littles loved it too!  I couldn’t wait to share the fun and learning we’ve been doing in our classroom!

This is our Construction/Blocks center.  This week they had to use the blocks to build a zoo for the animals.  They LOVED building zoos.  They had these large blocks to use, they also had small soft blocks and legos.  Most of the kiddos chose these big blocks as their first choice.

Here are the binoculars I made for my students to wear so that they could be Zookeepers for our zoo unit.  They were super easy to make.  I took two toilet paper rolls and taped them together with the cool zebra print duck tape that I found.  There was exactly enough tape to make 17 sets of binoculars, which is perfect because I have 17 students!  After taping them together, I punched holes on both sides and tied a piece of yarn to the binoculars.

Next, I made them Zookeeper vests.  This picture is what the vest looks like after I cut it.  In order to wear it, I flipped it inside out (next pic) and attached a Zookeeper badge onto it with each student’s name.  I don’t have step-by-step pics, but here’s what you do.  I asked my local grocery store for the large paper grocery bags.  First, I cut the line up the middle (from the opening).  Then I split it into a V shape.  I then cut the sides off to make arm hole openings.  Then you have to open it up and make a “head hole” and finish the arm holes.  I know without pics, it’s hard to imagine, but once you do the first one you’ll see exactly what I mean.  The first one wasn’t easy…I’ll be honest, but then the rest were much easier!  Feel free to ask me questions!
Here’s an upside down pic of our ABC center for the week.  I don’t know why it’s upside down…no matter what I did, it kept uploading that way.  SORRY!  Anyway, I included a bunch of zoo animals and pre-primer sight words for the kiddos to spell on cookie sheets (from the $1 store).  This is one of the items that I’m in the process of uploading to TpT.  Stay tuned!
Zoo Count & Clip
This is a Zoo Count & Clip activity that I did with my students this week.  I do different themed count & clips every week.  The kiddos love the different themes and don’t even realize that it’s the same super important skill that they’re working on!  Got to love that!  Click the image to get your copy on TpT.

Zz is for Zebra Little Reader
Last, but not least…here is the Zz is for Zebra little reader that I did with my class this week.  The pack comes in color and in black/white and has lots of skills for the littles.  They will count, identify colors, read repeated text (they love that they can “read” these books!)  Click the image to get your copy on TpT.

That’s all for tonight.  I hope you get some great Zz and zoo ideas to use with your littles!
